Meet Deirdre Carroll: Past President, Aspire North REALTORS®

Leading with Steadiness: Meet Deirdre Carroll

In real estate, leadership is often measured not by who makes the loudest impact, but by who consistently shows up, keeps things moving forward, and supports others through change. That quiet strength perfectly describes Deirdre Carroll.

As the Immediate Past President of Aspire North REALTORS® and an Associate Broker at Century 21 Northland, Deirdre has become a respected voice within the industry through her thoughtful leadership, practical mindset, and commitment to serving both members and the communities they represent.

From Critical Care Nursing to Real Estate Leadership

Before entering real estate nine years ago, Deirdre built her career in healthcare as a critical care nurse. While the transition may seem unexpected, the skills she developed in nursing continue to shape how she approaches leadership and client service today.

Her journey into real estate began with encouragement from fellow RN and Realtor Jennifer Edson-Rife, who suggested she give the industry a try. What started as a simple recommendation quickly evolved into a fulfilling career.

That healthcare background still influences her daily work. In both nursing and real estate, communication, trust, and calm decision-making matter deeply, especially during stressful or complicated situations.

“I try to ensure people understand what is happening, especially when things get complicated or chaotic,” Deirdre shares. “It’s also important to consider multiple perspectives and remain as inclusive as possible.”

Finding Purpose Through Association Involvement

Deirdre’s involvement with Aspire North REALTORS® began through classes and events, but about five years ago she decided to become more engaged. Starting with committee work, she became increasingly interested in how information and decisions were communicated to members.

That curiosity naturally led her to serving on the Board of Directors and eventually into the role of President.

While some gravitate toward the spotlight, Deirdre enjoys the behind-the-scenes work that keeps organizations functioning effectively.

“Scheduling, budgets, taxes, building upkeep, compliance, it may not be glamorous, but it’s the work that quietly prevents chaos,” she says.

That steady, practical approach proved especially valuable during one of the most challenging periods the industry has faced. During her time on the board, Aspire North REALTORS® navigated the pandemic, the NAR settlement, and the hiring of a new CEO, all while continuing to advocate for and support members.

For Deirdre, success has never been about making a splash. It has been about consistency, representation, and making sure members feel supported.

A Thoughtful Perspective on Industry Changes

As someone closely involved with both Aspire North REALTORS® and Michigan Realtors committees, Deirdre maintains a strong pulse on emerging trends within the industry.

One shift she finds especially significant is the growing number of local small business owners preparing for retirement. That transition is creating opportunities for entrepreneurs, investors, and expanding businesses throughout Northern Michigan.

“It’s a significant shift and pretty exciting,” she explains. “There’s a lot of opportunity out there, and it’s great to see organizations helping people figure out their next move.”

Her perspective reflects a broader understanding of how real estate intersects with economic development, community growth, and long-term planning.

Life Outside the Office

When she’s not working with clients or volunteering her time to the association, Deirdre enjoys spending time outdoors, especially hiking with her Irish Setter, Indy, who she describes as “the most enthusiastic trail partner ever.”

She also enjoys kayaking and golfing, although she jokes that her golf game is “best described as optimistic.”

And while many people know her as a Realtor and industry leader, fewer know that she once appeared in local television commercials as a child, a fact she’s grateful predates the internet era.

As for her favorite local destination? She’ll simply say Leelanau County and politely leave the rest a mystery.

Advice for the Next Generation of Realtors

For those entering the industry, Deirdre offers advice grounded in professionalism, humility, and care for clients.

“Be yourself, read contracts carefully, and ask questions when something is unclear,” she says. “You’re helping guide people through one of the biggest financial decisions they will ever make.”

She also emphasizes remembering the emotional significance behind every transaction.

“While this is something you do every day, for your clients it may be a once-in-a-lifetime purchase.”

Leading with Curiosity and Heart

Deirdre draws inspiration from Dr. Charlie Mayo and Dr. Will Mayo, pioneers who believed innovation and collaboration were essential to meaningful progress.

That philosophy mirrors her own approach to leadership: stay curious, embrace change, support others, and keep people at the center of the work.

At Aspire North REALTORS®, her leadership has helped create stability during periods of major industry change while ensuring members continue to feel represented and heard. It’s a legacy built not on recognition, but on reliability, and that’s exactly what makes it impactful.
